UH-OH! AT THE MOMENT, THERE ARE NO TOURS AVAILABLE FOR RIJKSMUSEUM
High demand, seasonal availability and unexpected closures can be the reason. We're working on getting it up and running. Meanwhile, you can search for other activities on our website. We don’t want you to leave disappointed!
The massive wall paintings that you see in the Rijksmuseum were once painted over in white by a misguided Art Director who thought they were a distraction. Luckily, they were restored nearly 40 years later. If you come across a suit of armor that’s missing a thigh guard, that’s because it belonged to Admiral Jacob van Heemskerck, who lost his leg to a Spanish cannonball and was killed. In 1715, Rembrandt’s The Night Watch was trimmed on all four sides to fit its new home, which removed two characters on the left side, as well as the top of the arch.
Rijksmuseum is the only museum on Earth that has a road going right through the middle of it! But, to protect the building and the priceless art, a law was passed in the 1930s to prohibit motor vehicles from using it.
The best time to visit the Rijksmuseum Museum is April through May. You’ll have the chance to avoid the massive crowds of tourists that fly in during the summer and enjoy the best weather of the year. The months of September through November also see lesser crowds. Winter is understandably cold, but the upside is that airfare and accommodation are cheaper.
If you’re going by tram, just take Tram 2 or Tram 12 to the Rijksmuseum stop. You can also take the Metro by hopping on No. 52 and alighting at the Vijzelgracht stop. Another option is riding a bicycle to the Rijksmuseum. Otherwise, if you’d prefer to drive around Amsterdam, then you should know that there is no parking near the entrance of the museum. Try parking in the paid Q-Park parking structure underneath Museumplein on Van Baerlestraat. You can also get the IAmsterdam City Card which offers unlimited use of Amsterdam’s whole public transportation system during the card’s validity, as well as free entry to a number of museums.
Rijksmuseum opens from 9 am to 5 pm every day including national holidays.
The Rijksmuseum is known for its vast collection of one of the finest artworks of prominent artists. One of the largest museums in the city, it spans over 1.5 km and houses famous paintings by artists like Johannes Vermeer, Van Gogh and Rembrandt.
