In a bid to reduce the number of worker deaths during the construction of the bridge, a safety net was suspended under the floor of the bridge from one end to another. The net saved the lives of 19 men who became known as the "Halfway-to-Hell Club." Proposed colours for the bridge included carbon grey, aluminium or black, while the U.S. Navy wanted black with yellow stripes (for greater visibility). Consulting architect Irving Morrow eventually opted for the strong red hue he called, International Orange as it was unusual, exciting and ensured the bridge would be visible through the fog. Commencing in 1933 and concluding in 1937, the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge faced formidable weather challenges such as dense fog and robust ocean currents. Renowned for its Art Deco design, the bridge is distinguished by the choice of International Orange to improve visibility amid San Francisco's prevalent fog.
