Volcanic eruptions in the Antrim area produced the 60-million-year-old hexagonal rock formations. The characteristic shape of the basalt columns was created by the gradual and regular cooling of the hot lava.
Giant’s Causeway lies about three miles northeast of the plateau of Antrim in Northern Ireland.
Giant’s Causeway is a geological formation that resulted from the volcanic eruptions of an ancient volcano. It is made up of over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns which are hexagonal in shape. The columns have up to eight sides and are about 39 feet tall.
The busiest hours are midday so the ideal time to visit the attraction is early in the morning or at dusk. The fog in the mornings makes for stunning photo ops, creating a mysterious effect. The visitor center opens at 9 am and stays open till evening.
You can take a minibus that will take you half a mile to the causeway. Tickets cost £1 one way. You should ideally book Giant Causeway tours from Dublin with transfers included in the package for a hassle-free experience.
There are also a number of scenic hiking trails that you must try.
While there is an entrance fee for the Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre, there is no charge for accessing the Giant's Causeway itself.
The duration of your visit to the Giant's Causeway will vary depending on your level of exploration. However, it is recommended to allocate at least 1-2 hours to stroll around and appreciate the breathtaking landscape.
Make sure to dress comfortably in appropriate attire for the weather conditions, and don't forget to bring a jacket or sweater as it can be breezy and cool around the coastline.
Yes, you can bring dogs to Giant’s Causeway but make sure that they are on a leash.
The earlier you book, the better deal you’re likely to get. Plan your trip well and book your tickets and tours months in advance to enjoy a budget-friendly trip.
